"I'm giving this 3 stars not because it's bad, but a lot of the info is outdated. It was published in 2009 and he makes predictions about Facebook and Twitter, and a fair bit of the advice is no longer accurate. That's what happens when you discuss technology in print, it is outdated quickly, but this has been 10 years. There is still some general info about branding yourself in the book that can still be applied today, but reading the book in 2018 makes you feel like you completely missed the opportunity he discusses in 2009. As a result I found it frustrating and anxiety-causing to read the book. To be honest, if you appreciate Gary V, the best way to learn from him is to watch his YouTube channel and Instagram feed. As Gary emphatically states, he is himself on video and that truly is the medium that suits him best, so why waste that reading a book, when you can get the most for your time learning from his videos. Plus the videos are more up to date. Based on this, I'm going to say, don't buy this book but instead consume his social media, and at worst, read his newest book since it's not as out of date on tech recommendations."

  • I'm giving this 3 stars not because it's bad, but a lot of the info is outdated. • Meh... Gary is an incredible worker and hats off to him for accomplishing what he has and the tenacity to put in the work like he says he does. But this book was okay. I feel like it would be a good read before "The 4-Hour Workweek" because it gets you pumped up to start, but lacks the finer details that "The 4-Hour Workweek" offers. It's a quick read so if you don't mind shelling out $10 or so, then it's not something you'll regret reading.

    Pros
It does get you motivated and it does make you believe that you can leave the 9 - 5 job and start something you're passionate about via the internet. He does a good job of outlining how people seem to make money from a variety of sources via social media and the web. He points out how someone's blog/website can go from just that to a money machine attracting all sorts of revenue streams - mainly through social media. I did like that part because it gave me a better idea of how exactly these types of people make money just from doing and talking about their passion. The book also shows how powerful a tool social media can be and gives a good case of why this is the way to gain a fan base rather than paid advertisements. And maybe that's all the book is supposed to be. Maybe it's not meant to get into detail of how to actually do this stuff.

    Cons
Detail detail detail. This book lacks detail. Like I said before, maybe he just wants to show you the outline and it's up to you to figure it out. That's fair enough. But when he says "let me show you how" over and over, you begin to think he is actually going to show you the finer details of how to actually do this stuff. That's why I said this is a decent precursor to "The 4-Hour Workweek" because that book goes into all sorts of detail. For instance, I'm into affiliate marketing. So when I saw a section about it I was excited to learn more. I was let down when the section ended less than two pages later. The message was basically "This is what affiliate marketing is and it can make you money on your website". Another example is chapter 9. Correct me if I'm wrong but at the the end of chapter 8 he promises to show you how to market well. And then chapter 9 reads "Care". And that's it. A small part of me wants to say, okay I get it.... but a much larger part of me thinks that's so cheesy. Care? C'mon. For the guy who prides himself on his work ethic, that was kind of a cope out. This book is very much like the title "Crush It!" - filled with a lot of "yeah! Hoorah! Do it! Go get 'em!" and little "okay, here is exactly how all of this works". Pretty much it's little substance and lots of "go get 'em tiger"

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit harsh. I don't mean to deter anyone away from this book - maybe it's meant to be a motivational book rather than a "how to" book. If anything, it's a quick read and you definitely won't be worse off from it. The overall picture it paints is good and for a lot of people that works better than being overloaded with details that they should find out for themselves afterwards.
  • Gary Vaynerchuk is the man! I have read all of his books, and am a huge fan. I first discovered him browsing through books on , and shortly after read "The Thank You Economy", I then read "Crush It", and then Jab Jab, and Ask GaryVee. I started watching his content on Youtube, and his Keynotes and was just extremely inspired and motivated to get out there and truly start hustling. Gary has so much knowledge to share, and there is tremendous value in his books, and free content on Youtube. If you are an entrepreneur, or would like to be one, this is a must read, a long with his other books as well. Personally my favorite was probably Jab Jab Jab Right Hook, however there is very good stuff in Crush It. I think reading Crush It first is a good place to start, and if you enjoy it then most definitely pick up his other books.
  • Do YOU want to be like ME?!? It's THIS simple. Yeah. You're just reading a ton of those stay at home mom, pyramid scheme, sales posts. You know them. They're all crazy eyed with their poor kids in the background. Pretty sure I do NOT want your life. So, if you're looking to read something that will actually prepare you for what you want to do, allow me to sum up what this guy says. In 148 pages he's narrowed it all down to this huge secret WORK. This is what I get for buying a book off a blogger's booklist who is, most likely, the same aforementioned crazy eyed, facebooker.
  • Pretty straight forward. It's the same information that has been coming out in any, "How to make money doing what you love." style of book. It's a good read, but I recommend waiting until it's on sale. It's about a $4.99 value at this point. Appendix A may come in handy for anyone needed lists to hand hold your progress, but most of the book is a narrative on how he got where he is, but no direct instruction of any kind.
  • I recently started to really dive into Gary Vee's universe and have all four of his business books now and decided to start reading them chronologically. This is a great book with tons of real examples of what he's talking about and how to execute his advice. I love the simplicity of his message and his approach. The best stuff is never complicated. The guy is sincere and knowledgeable and thinking of the future at every turn. Read this book because it's more timely than ever and I don't know anyone that can navigate the world of social media better than Gary Vee.
  • The book for crazy fans. You won't find anything new in it if you watch at least two-three Gary's videos a month.
  • Was hoping for a lot more concrete advice regarding building a website and building a brand. Instead we were left with a lot of broad strokes. Not useless, but not worth the money I paid for it. A lot of it is common sense, a lot of it can be learned for free elsewhere.
