Hello, world.

Facebook's algorithms shaping the news. Self-driving cars roaming the streets. Revolution on Twitter and romance on Tinder. We live in a world constructed of code--and coders are the ones who built it for us. From acclaimed tech writer Clive Thompson comes a brilliant anthropological reckoning with the most powerful tribe in the world today, computer programmers, in a book that interrogates who they are, how they think, what qualifies as greatness in their world, and what should give us pause. They are the most quietly influential people on the planet, and Coders shines a light on their culture.

In pop culture and media, the people who create the code that rules our world are regularly portrayed in hackneyed, simplified terms, as ciphers in hoodies. Thompson goes far deeper, dramatizing the psychology of the invisible architects of the culture, exploring their passions and their values, as well as their messy history. In nuanced portraits, Coders takes us close to some of the great programmers of our time, including the creators of Facebook's News Feed, Instagram, Google's cutting-edge AI, and more. Speaking to everyone from revered "10X" elites to neophytes, back-end engineers and front-end designers, Thompson explores the distinctive psychology of this vocation--which combines a love of logic, an obsession with efficiency, the joy of puzzle-solving, and a superhuman tolerance for mind-bending frustration.

Along the way, Coders thoughtfully ponders the morality and politics of code, including its implications for civic life and the economy. Programmers shape our everyday behavior When they make something easy to do, we do more of it. When they make it hard or impossible, we do less of it. Thompson wrestles with the major controversies of our era, from the "disruption" fetish of Silicon Valley to the struggle for inclusion by marginalized groups.

In his accessible, erudite style, Thompson unpacks the surprising history of the field, beginning with the first coders -- brilliant and pioneering women, who, despite crafting some of the earliest personal computers and programming languages, were later written out of history. Coders introduces modern crypto-hackers fighting for your privacy, AI engineers building eerie new forms of machine cognition, teenage girls losing sleep at 24/7 hackathons, and unemployed Kentucky coal-miners learning a new career.

At the same time, the book deftly illustrates how programming has become a marvelous new art form--a source of delight and creativity, not merely danger. To get as close to his subject as possible, Thompson picks up the thread of his own long-abandoned coding skills as he reckons, in his signature, highly personal style, with what superb programming looks like.

To understand the world today, we need to understand code and its consequences. With Coders, Thompson gives a definitive look into the heart of the machine.

"<em>Coders</em> is a sign of its times: instead of comprehensively covering the topic of code, how it works, and where it comes from, Thompson does some of that, which is to be commended, and a lot of fomenting discord through relentless stereotypes about race and sex. He seems to believe women and some people, based on the color of their skin, cannot code as some other groups can, and that implication is disconcerting, pervasive, and annoying in his book.

But Thompson cannot help himself; he is a creature of the media and he doesn't realize the bogosity of the water in which he swims. Instead of focusing on the product and how it is made, he focuses on the race and gender of the people making it. Software can be written by anyone; that is a topic to be celebrated. Thompson repeatedly misses the forest for the trees of race and gender.

There is a great book stashed inside this performatively "woke" book. Thompson keeps showing us glimpses of that great book, then hiding the great book away so he can repeat bland media formulas about how women and minorities are hurt most. News at 11. If this book is read in the far future, it will be seen as yet another example of the media class's obsessions in this age; instead of focusing on technology and how to build the future, Thompson focuses on media-enabled squabbles. We know that you've replaced church with the church of "social justice;" we don't need evangelizing for it in everything you do.

He claims, "Feminism and diversity are, indeed, sore points in the industry" (22). No, they are not; they are sore points in the grievance studies and media industries. Those are studies bent on complaining; tech is bent on building the future. He goes on to claim that "The racial makeup [of most tech cos] is not more diverse," then goes on to admit that Asians are prevalent in tech. Do they not count as diversity? Why does Thompson systematically exclude Asians? His own racial insensitivity shows here; performative wokeness shades back into the racism it claims to oppose. Thompson says early hackers "admired great code even if it came from someone with no rank at all" (37)—isn't that meritocracy?

Thompson asks, "What makes programming so often inhospitable for women?" He assumes it is, ignoring the vast number of successful women in the field. Why not focus harder on what makes coders, rather than the race or sex of the coders? Because that wouldn't reify Thompson's world view. We get it, Clive: you are a moral hero while the rest of us are mere struggling pygmies. Maybe one day we can be as good as you demonstrate yourself to be in this book."

Coders The Making of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World Clive Thompson Books Reviews

  • Clive Thompson’s new behind the screen look at the tribe of coders is by no means perfect. A journalist by profession, Thompson’s chapters somewhat read like a series of loosely connected articles for the New York Times magazine. But these glances at different aspects of the computer programming world do incisively capture the culture for both good and ill.

Written primarily for those who are not members of the tribe, as a data scientist I cannot say I learned much by reading it. But its depiction of the hyper-masculine, intellectually preoccupied, socially inept world of programming did resonate. Of course, Thompson is not the first writer to depict this world. Nor is he the first to opine that the immense amount of harm caused by these new technologies is the result of the blindnesses of this monoculture. But updating readers on the cultural changes in computing from the 1950s to the 1990s to 2019 is important for everyone who has to live in the partially online modern world.

Thompson also makes a concerted argument that the lack of women and minorities in computers is the result of cultural bias and not in any sense genetic. Though largely relying on anecdotal evidence the argument grows increasingly persuasive as the book advances. I wish Thompson had relied more on data and less on personal testimony. Given, however, that this is an issue with significant cultural and financial implications, it’s encouraging to see this position well-articulated.

I ended up thinking after reading it through that the book is a light and mostly pleasant way for those not in coding to understand something of this ever growing part of modernity. Not a must-read but something that non-coders will both benefit from and enjoy.
  • <em>Coders</em> is a sign of its times instead of comprehensively covering the topic of code, how it works, and where it comes from, Thompson does some of that, which is to be commended, and a lot of fomenting discord through relentless stereotypes about race and sex. • This is a good history of programming and programmers. I have read much of the historical material before in other books but this book manages to present new material in every chapter. This book seems to be targeted for the non-programmer or maybe someone who works with programmers and wants to figure out why they do things the way they do. First - there is not one programmer type but they good programmers share some common qualities that the book delves into for the reader. When my son wanted to become a programmer I feared there was one quality he did not have - ability to deal with frustration. The book details why that ability is essential for all good programmers to survive and thrive. I loved the book so much I purchased copies to give out to co-workers that have to work with coders.

"In this warm, wise, and witty overview, Jonathan Rauch combines evidence and experience to show his fellow adults that the best is yet to come.” ―Steven Pinker, bestselling author of Enlightenment Now

This book will change your life by showing you how life changes.

Why does happiness get harder in your 40s? Why do you feel in a slump when you’re successful? Where does this malaise come from? And, most importantly, will it ever end?

Drawing on cutting-edge research, award-winning journalist Jonathan Rauch answers all these questions. He shows that from our 20s into our 40s, happiness follows a U-shaped trajectory, a “happiness curve,” declining from the optimism of youth into what’s often a long, low slump in middle age, before starting to rise again in our 50s.

This isn’t a midlife crisis, though. Rauch reveals that this slump is instead a natural stage of life―and an essential one. By shifting priorities away from competition and toward compassion, it equips you with new tools for wisdom and gratitude to win the third period of life.

And Rauch can testify to this personally because it was his own slump, despite acclaim as a journalist and commentator that compelled him to investigate the happiness curve. His own story and the stories of many others from all walks of life―from a steelworker and a limo driver to a telecoms executive and a philanthropist―show how the ordeal of midlife malaise reboots our values and even our brains for a rebirth of gratitude.

Full of insights and data and featuring many ways to endure the slump and avoid its perils and traps, The Happiness Curve doesn’t just show you the dark forest of midlife, it helps you find a path through the trees. It also demonstrates how we can―and why we must―do more to help each other through the woods. Midlife is a journey we mustn’t walk alone.

"In this beautifully written book, Jonathan Rauch explains that we fundamentally misconceive "getting older". Patiently, with dozens of life stories (including his own), he shows how midlife crisis is less a reconciliation to dispair than a necessary step to a broader happiness. He also translates academic research to show that his anecdotes are not exceptions, but exemplars.

Far too much of what we read today serves only to reinforce what we already think. Try this book to reopen your eyes -- and get a more hopeful view of humanity."

The Happiness Curve Why Life Gets Better After 50 Jonathan Rauch Books Reviews

  • Interesting and heartening premise that life satisfaction dips in one's 40s then goes back up, and that this is true across gender, income, nationality, and even primate species. However, he acknowledges that his sources are skewed toward the high achieving and professional American and is this ever true.

If ambitious and fun-loving in your 20s, busy and very successful in your 30s, a bit disappointed in your 40s, but increasingly content and suddenly aware of the rest of humanity beyond 50 isn't your life trajectory, you may feel this book is a bit shallow and obvious. However, if your life has always been pretty fab and you find yourself concerned at 48 that you are sliding into a never ending funk with diminishing reason to live for the rest of your life, then hold off on the divorce/motorcycle/alcohol for at least as long as it takes to read this book.
  • This is without question the most important book I have ever read (and I've lost count at my age of how many books, thousands...). Written like a detective novel, but non-fiction, Rauch cleverly and powerfully combines insights from economists, psychologists and other experts to address a question that has baffled mankind for ages -- which is why so many people feel worse as they age (having nothing to do with their health, income, social status) and then more or less around 50 begin to feel more satisfied with their lives. Everyone, regardless of age, should read this book. If you're well under 50, it will warn you of potentially rocky times ahead, and if you're OK, you'll finally understand what you very likely have lived through but couldn't explain what or why you felt the way you did. This book is a masterpiece, and one you can't put down once you start. To say it's a tour de force is not to do it justice. Whatever prizes this book should win, it should win (though the author will tell you why the good feeling he will earn from this will be fleeting). There are similar lessons for the rest of us. Don't wait, buy this book, read it, and bask in the glow.
  • From one of our leading public intellectuals who has written path-breaking books to defend free inquiry, promote gay marriage, and propose ways to improve our fractured politics comes perhaps his most important work of all -- a clear, concise, cogent, and compelling exploration of that most elusive of goals happiness. From his own experience and that of many others with whom he spoke, Jonathan Rauch explains why we endure a mid-life slump in our outlook, but one that's thankfully followed almost invariably by a happier mood after we pass age 50. Rauch reassures us that our slump has less to do with objective reality -- the accomplishments of our lives to that point -- and more to do with the normal rhythms of human existence. And he offers us hope, backed by extensive research, that better days are ahead for us as we age. This is a marvelous, beautifully written, uplifting work of research and reality, passion and humanity. Read it -- now. You'll be glad that you did.
  • Thrilled to see my pre-ordered electronic copy appear in my library early this morning, I started reading The Happiness Curve over coffee before work and will be sneaking into a conference room to read more over my lunch hour. I have needed this book. I am currently in the trough of the curve, eager to be on an upward trajectory but aware that I am being changed in necessary ways. I'm grateful for the research but particularly for the encouragement Rauch offers in his candor about his own experiences. What our culture has historically called "midlife crisis" has for me been more of a slow, steady sloughing away of the habits, beliefs, and preoccupations of the first half of life as the gifts of the second half beckon to me in dreams and precious moments of insight. Having patience with the process has been challenging for me. What is wrong with me? is a frequent thought. Wise authors have helped me know the question itself is simply a sign of significant natural change. The Happiness Curve is a welcome addition to my library of midlife handbooks, sources of comfort and inspiration. Thank you, Mr. Rauch, for such a great gift!
  • In this beautifully written book, Jonathan Rauch explains that we fundamentally misconceive "getting older".

Try this book to reopen your eyes -- and get a more hopeful view of humanity.
  • It’s hard to put into words, especially within the confines of an review, exactly what is so wonderful about this book. The writing, of course, is sublime – Jonathan Rauch is one of the best journalists of his generation, and he has an almost preternatural ability to write compellingly about even the most complicated subjects. But the subject matter, of course, is what really makes this book required reading for anyone approaching, in the middle of, or leaving middle-age. In a word, what this book has to offer is hope – hope for people who are going through hard times in middle-age, hope for people who find themselves doing OK in middle-age but nervous about what old age may hold, and frankly, hope for anyone who thinks or worries at all about how life changes as you get older. The message Rauch delivers is comforting, smart, insightful, and relentlessly optimistic. There’s not a lot of optimism in our world today, and cynicism seems to be the coin of the realm for many people. Not so with Jonathan Rauch. His book is a welcome antidote to that corrosive mindset. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s the kind of book that you will not only find yourself underlining constantly, but that you will tell friends they have to read with such pestering insistence that they might think something’s a little bit wrong with you. The book is just that damn good.

Ebook Crush It! Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion Audible Audio Edition Gary Vaynerchuk HarperAudio Books

"I'm giving this 3 stars not because it's bad, but a lot of the info is outdated. It was published in 2009 and he makes predictions about Facebook and Twitter, and a fair bit of the advice is no longer accurate. That's what happens when you discuss technology in print, it is outdated quickly, but this has been 10 years. There is still some general info about branding yourself in the book that can still be applied today, but reading the book in 2018 makes you feel like you completely missed the opportunity he discusses in 2009. As a result I found it frustrating and anxiety-causing to read the book. To be honest, if you appreciate Gary V, the best way to learn from him is to watch his YouTube channel and Instagram feed. As Gary emphatically states, he is himself on video and that truly is the medium that suits him best, so why waste that reading a book, when you can get the most for your time learning from his videos. Plus the videos are more up to date. Based on this, I'm going to say, don't buy this book but instead consume his social media, and at worst, read his newest book since it's not as out of date on tech recommendations."

  • Meh... Gary is an incredible worker and hats off to him for accomplishing what he has and the tenacity to put in the work like he says he does. But this book was okay. I feel like it would be a good read before "The 4-Hour Workweek" because it gets you pumped up to start, but lacks the finer details that "The 4-Hour Workweek" offers. It's a quick read so if you don't mind shelling out $10 or so, then it's not something you'll regret reading.

    Pros
It does get you motivated and it does make you believe that you can leave the 9 - 5 job and start something you're passionate about via the internet. He does a good job of outlining how people seem to make money from a variety of sources via social media and the web. He points out how someone's blog/website can go from just that to a money machine attracting all sorts of revenue streams - mainly through social media. I did like that part because it gave me a better idea of how exactly these types of people make money just from doing and talking about their passion. The book also shows how powerful a tool social media can be and gives a good case of why this is the way to gain a fan base rather than paid advertisements. And maybe that's all the book is supposed to be. Maybe it's not meant to get into detail of how to actually do this stuff.

    Cons
Detail detail detail. This book lacks detail. Like I said before, maybe he just wants to show you the outline and it's up to you to figure it out. That's fair enough. But when he says "let me show you how" over and over, you begin to think he is actually going to show you the finer details of how to actually do this stuff. That's why I said this is a decent precursor to "The 4-Hour Workweek" because that book goes into all sorts of detail. For instance, I'm into affiliate marketing. So when I saw a section about it I was excited to learn more. I was let down when the section ended less than two pages later. The message was basically "This is what affiliate marketing is and it can make you money on your website". Another example is chapter 9. Correct me if I'm wrong but at the the end of chapter 8 he promises to show you how to market well. And then chapter 9 reads "Care". And that's it. A small part of me wants to say, okay I get it.... but a much larger part of me thinks that's so cheesy. Care? C'mon. For the guy who prides himself on his work ethic, that was kind of a cope out. This book is very much like the title "Crush It!" - filled with a lot of "yeah! Hoorah! Do it! Go get 'em!" and little "okay, here is exactly how all of this works". Pretty much it's little substance and lots of "go get 'em tiger"

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit harsh. I don't mean to deter anyone away from this book - maybe it's meant to be a motivational book rather than a "how to" book. If anything, it's a quick read and you definitely won't be worse off from it. The overall picture it paints is good and for a lot of people that works better than being overloaded with details that they should find out for themselves afterwards.
  • Gary Vaynerchuk is the man! I have read all of his books, and am a huge fan. I first discovered him browsing through books on , and shortly after read "The Thank You Economy", I then read "Crush It", and then Jab Jab, and Ask GaryVee. I started watching his content on Youtube, and his Keynotes and was just extremely inspired and motivated to get out there and truly start hustling. Gary has so much knowledge to share, and there is tremendous value in his books, and free content on Youtube. If you are an entrepreneur, or would like to be one, this is a must read, a long with his other books as well. Personally my favorite was probably Jab Jab Jab Right Hook, however there is very good stuff in Crush It. I think reading Crush It first is a good place to start, and if you enjoy it then most definitely pick up his other books.
  • Do YOU want to be like ME?!? It's THIS simple. Yeah. You're just reading a ton of those stay at home mom, pyramid scheme, sales posts. You know them. They're all crazy eyed with their poor kids in the background. Pretty sure I do NOT want your life. So, if you're looking to read something that will actually prepare you for what you want to do, allow me to sum up what this guy says. In 148 pages he's narrowed it all down to this huge secret WORK. This is what I get for buying a book off a blogger's booklist who is, most likely, the same aforementioned crazy eyed, facebooker.
  • Pretty straight forward. It's the same information that has been coming out in any, "How to make money doing what you love." style of book. It's a good read, but I recommend waiting until it's on sale. It's about a $4.99 value at this point. Appendix A may come in handy for anyone needed lists to hand hold your progress, but most of the book is a narrative on how he got where he is, but no direct instruction of any kind.
  • I recently started to really dive into Gary Vee's universe and have all four of his business books now and decided to start reading them chronologically. This is a great book with tons of real examples of what he's talking about and how to execute his advice. I love the simplicity of his message and his approach. The best stuff is never complicated. The guy is sincere and knowledgeable and thinking of the future at every turn. Read this book because it's more timely than ever and I don't know anyone that can navigate the world of social media better than Gary Vee.
  • The book for crazy fans. You won't find anything new in it if you watch at least two-three Gary's videos a month.
  • Was hoping for a lot more concrete advice regarding building a website and building a brand. Instead we were left with a lot of broad strokes. Not useless, but not worth the money I paid for it. A lot of it is common sense, a lot of it can be learned for free elsewhere.
