Holy Grounds The Surprising Connection between Coffee and Faith From Dancing Goats to Satan Drink Tim Schenck 9781506448237 Books Reviews

  • Fr Tim writes with the passion of a convert - to coffee. I barely even drink the stuff myself - tea is my tipple - but I consumed the whole book in under a weekend.
The history is fascinating, and the legends are fun, dancing goats and all. And was coffee in fact the elusive and eye-opening forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden? Of course, the true treasure is the relationships that come through sharing coffee and appreciating its production, from the hills of Nicaragua to a Boston harbor coffee shop.
I will definitely be assigning this to my book group, even though it may change coffee hour forever. I am even tempted to find a proper coffee shop and drink a cup ...
  • Buy this book! And no, I don't know the author, but I wish I did. It is a fun, conversational read written by a modern day pastor you wish you'd run into in your own local coffee shop. Not a dull paragraph in the book. Full of interesting stories from the crazy characters of the middle ages to the present day inner workings of Starbucks headquarters. I got some tips and I am definitely not making my coffee the same way any more. And I am going to change things up, and head over to my local coffee shop more often. We need more books like this in our lives these days. And definitely more preachers like Tim.
  • Holy Grounds presents the history of coffee in a lighthearted manner that also explores it's relationship to several religious and social practices. A fun, fast read with a dose of theological theories mixed in.
  • Lovely book! Filled with humor, history, and insight. I have come away with a lot of ideas for ministry! I’m sharing with all the coffee lovers I know!
  • I love my coffee. My first stop every morning (er, uh... my second, actually) is to the kitchen to brew my first cup. And so begins the day. I'm always looking for ways to make the experience even more enjoyable. I've tried hundreds of types and flavors of coffee, different methods for brewing, and recently I started grinding my beans by hand.

This book has served to amp up my search for the perfect cup. It has also given me a glimpse into the origins of my morning ritual. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to learn that coffee started out as a spiritual exercise. It also served as a basis for friendship, conversation, rebellion, and revolution.

This book has also caused me to think a little more seriously about where and how my coffee is currently produced. I had previously read about organic and "fair-trade" coffees, but had not given a lot of thought to the importance of these concepts to my actual consumption. I live in Ecuador, a coffee producing region, but I haven't availed myself of the opportunity to visit a farm where the actual growing and harvesting takes place. This book has inspired me to remedy that deficiency as soon as possible.

Photographs, short, easy-to-read chapters, and an engaging writing style combine to make this a five-star book.
  • Father Tim really likes his coffee. To so astutely study and share the history of coffee is a treat, but this is a gift which has just begun giving! The story of coffee's turbulent rise to be such an essential part of our own history has parallels to our Christian faith in its birth pangs, early years and even today. Christian faith began in war and occupation, and there have been many difficulties along the way. If you know any of the history of faith, the coffee story becomes a parable of things done, some right, some wrong. There are similar lessons inferred in the history of coffee that the Church shares or needs to know. As parables have different types of hearers, there will be differences in interpretation, but there are rewards for all. Other than considering coffee the "unnamed sacrament" of the fellowship hour, we can learn from this parable that unintended smilarities can teach new knowledge! As a person of faith, the history of coffee practically shouts ways Christianity can learn and be enriched by a totally different metaphor! One can become wise by considering the humane cultivation of historic faith and fragile faithful many years removed by years from origination.

This book is always an inviting read, even to a non-coffee aficionado! The drama draws one in and the similarities are addictive.
I read this book in one sitting, couldn't put it down, anxious to discover the next revelation! This is a well-constructed mystery
that will delight and inform. Buy this book!
